Behind the Scenes: Team Day at Art Omi

For this month’s team day we went all the way up to Ghent, NY to check out Art Omi! This team day was hosted by Ben F and it was almost all of our first times there. You may remember Gina’s team day where we went to Storm King Art Center. Storm King and Art Omi are similar in being outdoor sculpture parks, but their works are very different and it was exciting for us to see the works at both.

We learned that Art Omi does not have a permanent collection but rather has works that stay for 2-5 years with some exceptions that have stayed longer. There are also a few artist residency opportunities at Art Omi including an architecture residency program aiming to “nurture experimentation at the intersection of architecture, art, and landscape”. It was so inspiring to see works from architects and the overall range of work.

We began by getting a quick overview of the art center and walking around the gallery where a show, Shared Space-Collective Practices, was being exhibited. Ben F then explained to us that we were going to do a semi-scavenger hunt. He created and printed out a list of vague clues that we then had to match up with a work of art at the park.

We started off strong with the first sculpture we saw matching with clue #2: I live on NY rooftops.

We continued to walk around the entire park, interacting with each piece and trying to guess which clue they belonged to.

#37 up down
#7 Heavy pour (concrete)
#23 wheeeeee! (porch vibes)

#21 makes the sky purple
#39 Canopy done right

#13 colorful boulders (although we were laughing at how it was a massive m&m)

After getting our steps in, we earned a warm bowl (or two) of Ben and Marica’s homemade chilis! It was the perfect soup for the day.

I gratefully accepted all of the leftovers of Marica’s chili!

As both we and our chili got chilly (no pun intended) from being outside, we went inside the welcome center. Inside, we shared our SWOT with one another: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. We then walked off some of the chili with one final lap around the park. It was a great day and we were happy the weather was overall warmer than we thought it would be! Thank you Ben for organizing a lovely day outdoors.
