Celebrating Residential Architecture: #HouseoftheDay USA

In honor of National Architecture Week 2015 this week, April 12 – 18, we’re celebrating residential architecture by highlighting houses from all around the nation – #HouseoftheDay from the 50 USA:

#HouseoftheDay:

I am excited to be part of a group of small firm architects who are taking the time to seek out inspiring designs and promote residential architecture along the way… We have accomplished our goal to post a House of the Day each week from 1 of the 50 United States! AND…we’ve had so much fun doing it, we’re keeping the #HouseoftheDay up with a different set of criteria… check our Facebook page next week to see what we’re up to next!

Each Monday we presented houses that inspire us (from a State designated the week prior) on our company Facebook pages. Studio MM joined in this “architecture challenge” with Keith from CogitateDesign PLLC + Nicholas from Cote Renard Architecture + lee CALISTI architecture+design. Since we started posting, others have gotten in on our FUN as well: Sean J. Tobin, Architect + Robert from Ross Design, Inc.+ Dan Rider from Cline Design Associates + our friends at digArchitecture

Last October, about half way through our 51 weeks or so of posting every Monday on facebook, we wrote about Celebrating Residential Architecture, Promoting the Value of Working with an Architect, and Encouraging Support among Architects… and shared some of our favorites from the first 25 States… In honor of Architecture Week this week AND the fact that we have succeeded in our quest to post from EACH of the 50 US (+ DC), I’m highlighting even more #HouseoftheDays today:

Week 50: Hawaii “I have been looking forward to the State of ‪#‎Hawaii‬ to come up as ‪#‎HouseoftheDay‬ so I could post this house by Olson Kundig Architects: Slaughterhouse Beach House – which I LOVE for its indoor-outdoor architecture + amazing design details! The kitchen countertop which extends from inside to outside (when the overhead door is closed) is my very favorite part!…” Slaughterhouse Beach House by Olson Kundig Architects, photography by Simon Watson

Week 35: Colorado “My choice…House in The Mountains by Gluck+. Yeah I know…surprise, surprise, but what can I say, love their work!..” Photography by Paul Warchol
(Editor’s note: I recently heard an excellent lecture by Gluck+ on their current/recent work…this house was one they presented – not only explaining how they considered all of the sustainable elements as integral to the design, but how they went back a couple years later after monitoring the system since the owners moved in, and tweaked it so it would perform at the very highest level for the client. Architecture in every sense of the word – not just a good looking house. Nice!)

In the end, I decided to revisit the office of Robert Gurney Architect, and his firm’s Wissioming House2, in Glen Echo, MD.” Photography by Maxwell MacKenzie Architectural Photographer
