“The devil may be in the details, but careful attention to how materials meet and compositions come together is often what distinguishes an exceptional residential design from a merely good one.” – perfectly noted by the jury for the 2017 Residential Architect Design Awards.

“Details are not the Details…they make the Design!”
We design custom modern homes, and we are most excited about that first part: custom. As architects we love getting into the details – it’s what makes each home we design unique and special. Whether it takes 4 sketches to talk through how the soffit, window, lighting and recessed curtain all come together or 10 iterations of how the handle and threshold work on a pocket door, we are inspired by the process of working through each detail to find a simple and elegant solution.

Design Details for a Modern Home
Today we’re sharing a few of the details we’ve been working on for one of our projects, Tranquil Abiding. We typically start with hand sketches – often sketching back and forth with team members to discuss ideas – and then move into the computer with a more final iteration. You’ll see initial tracing paper sketches to model “sketches” and various iterations in between. Exploring how these details come together is one of our favorite challenges in the world of architecture!

Note: Most of the details in today’s post were drawn by Colbi Campbell. Hope you enjoy her sketching as much as I do!!
