Construction Update: Renovation of Hemlock Hideaway

One of our renovation projects in Accord is called Hemlock Hideaway. Construction work on this project started in November of last year, so we thought it was high time for us to give you an update on all of the progress thus far!

Existing Conditions

When we started the renovation the rear of the home (pictured above) featured a number of different deck spaces. We worked with our clients to reorganize the interior spaces while staying within the roofline of the existing home.

One of the spaces we’re renovating is the kitchen! While functional, the space wasn’t the inspirational kitchen our clients were hoping for. We’re also opening up the spaces at the back of the house to create a larger kitchen-dining-living area. The front of the home will feature a library and music space, as well as a formalized entry.

Demo and Foundation Work

In addition to the renovation of the existing home, we are also adding a new garage space adjacent to the house. While demo was happening on the interior of the existing home, the contractor got to work on the foundation for the new garage space.

Interior Progress and Framing

After demo was complete, we evaluated a few structural adjustments to what we had originally planned. The ridgeline of the house needed additional reinforcement and the contractor suggested extending the posts supporting our new stair design to the crawl space to better support the somewhat freestanding bookshelf. Once structural work was complete, the new windows were installed. We love the mix of old and new on this house!

After rearranging the upstairs to make for more functional spaces and creating the new open layout on the lower level, new drywall was installed.

Starting Finishes

We stopped by a couple weeks ago to check out the recent progress. Drywall is complete and prep for finishes has started! The image below is of the new dining area, looking towards the new living space.

The new windows in the kitchen also look great, as does the new design for the corner window in the living area!

We also love how simple the new corner windows look from the exterior! We’re also glad that the original skylights remain – they provide great framed views of the surrounding trees. We’re looking forward to this renovation project wrapping up construction soon!
