Construction Update July: Gardiner Art Studio

This week, we are showing off all of the progress over at Gardiner Art Studio. Our last construction update was in December and this small but mighty studio space has been making good progress since then!

The last images we shared on our blog were taken just before the planters surrounding the studio were poured. The two steel frames at each end of the studio were put up shortly after our last post. This was a fun moment to witness and was our first glimpse of what the view was like through the windows at each end of the studio space!

Once steel went up, framing began! The simplicity of the studio belies the complexity of some of the framing – with full glazing at either end and unique steel to wood and steel to concrete connections, it was important to get everything just right.

Windows were installed earlier this year – this was the moment we were all waiting for! These areas are part of the reason that attention to detail was so critical during framing. Once the windows were completed, insulation and HVAC install could be wrapped up.

While waiting on the windows to be installed, we met with our clients and the GC onsite to review samples and finalize finishes.

We were onsite most recently to review some of the drywall details at the windows. Drywall returns at windows are a standard detail in our projects, but getting them to line up just right can be tricky. In this project, we have wood, steel and windows all intersecting at critical moments, so it takes a bit of care to get the drywall looking just right. Before these mockups were installed, we got up to a bit of a balancing act while figuring out the best details!
