Architects love to design modern stairs… open risers, cantilevered from one side, floating from the center, one continuous folding material…so many cool options!
Perhaps it’s the challenge of designing something amazing but simple – and therefore not any more expensive to build – that is just more than we can resist. Oh, and still complying with local codes as well. Whatever it is, Architects love to design cool modern stairs. In some cases that translates to an extremely simple stair design with a uniquely “wow” modern railing or guardrail. …which is what we’re focusing on with today’s post.
Modern Railing and Guardrail Designs
The contemporary home we are designing in Lake Wylie, SC has 2 staircases that are visible from the living area but neither is a focal point of the house. …in other words, we don’t have any “extra” budget to allocate to these stairs, but of course I still would like to design a little “wow.” Some of the inspirational images we’ve collected below are great examples of ways to do just that! Enjoy.

By the way, I mentioned Architects love designing stairs… this house has (at least) 3 different very cool and uniquely designed stairs. The above is only one of them. A dream project for an architect!

I love the fun aspect of this modern railing / guardrail, but our clients have 2 young boys… I’m pretty sure this would quickly become many things other than a simple guardrail!
Random Railing by Monoloko Design, photos from Contemporist. The artsy appeal of this guardrail is great in that it feels fun but still sophisticated and sculptural as well.
