Design is in Experience + Culture
In lieu of a typical Architect’s Notebook post today I am going to share a few photos from our recent trip to Italy and encourage you all to go out and explore!
“So often we become so focused on the finish line that we fail to enjoy the journey.” – Deiter Uchtdorf
This post is a little bit about details, but more about getting out and experiencing the world around you. I believe we are better designers when we understand, or at least experience, other cultures. Learning about the history of a place and how it came to be – and how it has changed over time – can tell you so much about how people live. I just got back from a vacation in Italy and it was one of the greatest experiences I have had in a long time. Besides being able to step away from work long enough to fully recharge, immersing ourselves into the Italian culture was the best part of our trip. We visited galleries and museums, historic homes and palazzos, and walked with a guide through a small section of Florence learning about the history and culture of the city. We spent time in southern Tuscany soaking up (wine) the country culture and learning more about historic towns and architecture. The trip was amazing to say the least. What are you waiting for? Get out and explore!
