Residential Design Inspiration: Modern Pool Canopy / Outdoor Shady Spots

Modern Pool Canopies and Outdoor Shady Spots

Yes, we are stalking pool designs again, but it IS still Summer!  …and we’re going to hang on as long as we can!

We’re finalizing the site plan for one of our newest residential projects in the Catskills of New York and have been looking for images for inspiration. The design includes a linear pool that stretches from the main house to an accessory structure across a large courtyard. Our clients would like part of the pool to be shaded – preferably the shallow end which would normally be closest to the main house and where most people would enter the pool… BUT, the town in which this property is located has a rule that the pool must be a minimum of 10 feet away from the primary structure. Apparently this is to prevent (or attempt to prevent) people from jumping off the roof into the pool. Ummm…10 feet? Pretty sure I could make the 10 foot distance but gotta say the results would be far less risky if the pool was CLOSER to the house!… #justsayin

Well, rules are rules…and we’re now thinking about how we can provide a separate shaded section for the pool. In researching images online I’ve actually found that shading pools is not as common as I thought it might be. There are various Modern Pool Canopy or Cabana ideas providing shade on the deck surrounding the pools, and there are lots of images for shaded areas such as Modern Pergolas or Outdoor Shaded Patio spaces…but not much inspiration for providing shade over the actual pool. Personally I don’t think this is such a strange request – I mean, who doesn’t want to sip margaritas on a sweltering summer day IN the pool with a little shade from the hot summer sun?

So with the images below we’re asking you to get a little more creative in your thinking…. today we’ve got inspiration. Once we get to build this pool in the Catskills, we’ll have perfectly shaded pool images to go along with our ideas. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
