This modern bed and breakfast in upstate New York invites guests to enjoy an interactive farm stay while taking in the beauty and serenity of the Hudson Valley.
On a working farm and animal sanctuary in Accord, New York, Farm Bed and Breakfast is inspired by the sprawling agrarian landscape, as well as guests’ up-close interaction with sanctuary animals. In close proximity to traditional barns already on the property, the design for the bed and breakfast responds not only to the regional vernacular of the Hudson Valley’s rolling farmland, but to the immediate architectural context of the site itself.
Overlooking Rondout Creek below and Mohonk Mountain the distance, the bed and breakfast is oriented to capture inspiring views from the northwest-facing public space, as well as from each of the five guestrooms. A nod to the form of traditional barns and farmhouses, the public volume incorporates a soaring pitched roof, with a wall of glass showcasing views of the open sky and mountain ridge below. Containing a communal kitchen, dining room, and lounge area, the group gathering space is a lively hub to share a farm-to-table meal or have a thought-provoking conversation. Outside, the adjoining deck overlooks the goat pasture, providing a direct transition to the sanctuary and grounds.
The bed and breakfast’s guest suites, each named after a beloved farm animal, are thoughtful and inviting spaces for private retreat. Modern dormers give each of the guestrooms their own balcony, while adding a fresh counterpoint to the traditionally-influenced lines of the exterior façade. The interior finishes, simple and comfortable, create a cozy environment for guests to relax and recharge. Built-in maple headboards add a warm, custom touch while smartly providing valuable storage for guests in lieu of closets. One larger guestroom incorporates a sleeping loft and can flexibly accommodate families with children or those who crave added space for longer stays.
By imagining how the space would be used by not one, but many, visitors, the bed and breakfast is poised to host a myriad of guests and events in the future. Cultivating an appreciation for nature and all living things, Farm Bed and Breakfast encourages social activism and awareness while enabling a truly restorative rural getaway in the Hudson Valley.
