Rebus, Latin for concrete, appropriately names this retreat in Saugerties, New York. The moniker was fittingly chosen by our clients who, since the beginning of our conversations, were excited for the material to be included in their new home’s design. On a flat lot backing up to beautiful cliff faces, the cube-shaped home has sightlines to the east that open up to highlight 180 degree views across the Hudson Valley.

Just outside the entry to the home, a pergola creates a semi-sheltered outdoor dining area bordered by poured concrete walls with an incorporated fireplace. Upon entering the home, the stark exterior presence of the concrete is penetrated to reveal a warm and cozy interior.

The double-height concrete wall extends from the front door to the opposite side of the home and the open-tread stairs. Openings in the wall lead to a mudroom, powder room, and mechanical room. Custom oak-veneer doors add warmth to the mass of the concrete and tie together with the oak in the kitchen cabinets and flooring.

The concrete wall is also visible from the open living area. A ceiling mounted projector with a recessed screen makes for the best movie nights and a window seat nook is ideal peaceful reading. The living area is flanked by floor to ceiling windows with a large flat deck extending from the interior space. The spacious deck has plenty of room for a firepit and seating for entertaining guests.

On the second floor a light-filled main suite and a gracious main bathroom overlook the Hudson Valley at the back of the house. A private balcony off of the main bedroom offers the opportunity to quietly take in the surrounding views from a new point of view.

Opposite of the main bedroom, a guest bedroom is kept more private and features built-in storage around the bed as well as a built-in desk nook, perfect for working from home. The guest bathroom is tucked around the stair volume and features a floor to ceiling glass panel.

A retreat focused on outdoor living, Rebus celebrates quiet seclusion while taking advantage of spectacularly diverse Hudson Valley views.
