Introducing: Ask an Architect

We’ve always loved the conversations we have with our clients. Some of the most rewarding moments in our work happen around the conference table, on site visits, or even on Zoom when someone asks a question that gets to the heart of what it really means to design and build a home. We’ve fielded everything from “What should I expect during construction?” or “How involved do I need to be during each part of the process?” to “How do I even begin to think about lighting?” and “Do I really need a mudroom?”

These conversations have shaped how we work, and we’ve realized that many of you—whether you’re currently working with us, considering a project, or simply curious about the process—probably have similar questions. So we’re excited to introduce a new series here on the blog: Ask an Architect.

What is Ask an Architect?

Think of this as an ongoing dialogue between us and you. We’ll be tackling the questions we hear most often from our clients, the things people wish they’d known before starting a project, and the topics that come up again and again as we move through design and construction. We’ll also be turning the tables and asking our clients to share their own experiences and insights—because sometimes the best answers come from those who have been through the process themselves.

A small gravel patio sits just below the home and is a place for our client and her dog to connect.

We want this series to feel like the kinds of conversations we have in real life: honest, informative, and occasionally even surprising. Whether you’re curious about the nitty-gritty details like selecting paint colors or tile, interested in bigger questions about budget and scope, or wondering what it’s really like to live through a renovation, we’re here to share what we know.

What You Can Expect

Over the coming months, we’ll be exploring a wide range of topics that matter to anyone thinking about designing or building a home. Some posts will be educational deep dives into things like exterior materials, lighting design, or how permitting actually works. Others will feature real stories from our clients—the favorite moments, the biggest surprises, and the lessons learned along the way.

We’ll talk about the creative aspects of the process, like how we approach renovations versus new builds, how to make selections that feel right for your home, and what goes into designing spaces that truly work for the way you live. We’ll also get into the practical side: understanding construction timelines, working with contractors, managing budgets, and navigating those inevitable moments when plans need to shift.

And because we know that some of the most valuable insights come from people who have actually gone through the process, we’ll be featuring perspectives from our clients. What was their favorite part of working with us? What surprised them most? What do they wish they’d known from the start? These stories will give you a window into what it’s really like to bring a home from initial idea to finished reality.

A Conversation, Not a Lecture

The goal here isn’t to overwhelm you with information or make the process seem more complicated than it needs to be. Instead, we want to demystify what can sometimes feel like an intimidating journey and help you feel more confident and informed, whether you’re at the very beginning of thinking about a project or deep in the middle of construction.

We also know that every project is different, and every client has their own priorities, constraints, and dreams. So while we’ll share our perspective and experience, we’ll always be honest about the fact that there’s rarely just one right answer. Architecture is as much about listening and adapting as it is about designing and building.

Let’s Start the Conversation

We’re thrilled to launch this series and can’t wait to dig into all of these topics with you. If there’s something specific you’d like us to cover or a question you’ve been wondering about, we’d love to hear from you. Otherwise, stay tuned for our first Ask an Architect post, and thank you for being part of the Studio MM community. Here’s to a new year of learning, sharing, and creating together!
