As we were planning what project to showcase for this month’s construction update, we realized that we have never posted a construction update on Fermata! If you follow us on Instagram, you probably know that we’ve made some incredible progress on this project, so it’s pretty surprising that we haven’t yet written about it here.
The benefit of not yet having shared all of the progress is that we get to do it all in one post – so you’ll really get to see the house coming together from the very beginning. In case you don’t quite remember the details of the design for Fermata, check out our Behind the Design post. For inspiration behind the large overhanging roof with a central opening above the courtyard, check out our recent Design Inspiration post.
Stake-Out, Excavation + Foundations
Placing the house is always one of the most critical parts of a project. We sited Fermata to take advantage both of the seasonal Hudson Valley views to the east and the year-round views of the Kaaterskill Wild Forest to the west.
During this phase, we also met with our plumbing, mechanical and electrical subcontractors to coordinate everything that had to happen “in the ground” below the concrete slab.
Radiant + Concrete Slab
Once we had completed the stem walls, insulation and backfill, we moved on to radiant and plumbing. As mentioned above, it’s important to get everything in before the slab is poured – most of all the radiant, which will warm the concrete slab throughout the house.
Once radiant, plumbing and electrical We worked with Bob Brown at Precision Concrete to pour the foundations and slab. He made sure to cover the slab to slow down the drying process to help ensure a super smooth and flat slab. We’re thrilled with the outcome!
Exterior Framing & Roofing
Once the slab had set and we had removed the plastic cover, Max of Cherry Hill Construction got to work! He has an amazing crew that worked at near warp speed to get the bulk of the house framed and ready for roofing. Check out the photos below for the sequential progress.
We think the house looks amazing so far – it’s so fun to keep coming back onsite to see more and more progress! In the coming months, we’ll be working on getting water and propane to the site, installing windows and installing siding. We can hardly wait to see it closed in!
