    project description

    Planche Table
    Design and Construction: 1999 – 2001
    bending birch plywood
    custom stainless steel connections
    raw steel
    glass
    concrete

The concept for the table was created to express the structural integrity of materials. The acrobatic form developed from a position in gymnastics in which a gymnast maintains stability while on her hands with her feet arched 90 degrees over her head, challenging the limits of balance. Raw steel and concrete compose the counterbalance weight of the base which embraces the torso element of laminated wood; these two contrasting figures work together to support a functional plane of glass. The refined details of the connections are highlighted with polished stainless steel.
